My final book of the year, and yet, the first one I've written about.
Book Title: My Sister's Keeper Author: Jodi Picoult Genre: Literature/Fiction # of pages: 423 My rating of the book, A [best] to F- [worst]: A Summary (from book): "Anna is not sick, but she might as well be. By age thirteen, she has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and shots so that her older sister, Kate, can somehow fight the leukemia that has plagued her since childhood. The product of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, Anna was conceived as a bone marrow match for Kate - a life and role that has never changed...until now. Like most teenagers, Anna is beginning to question who she truly is. But unlike most teenagers, she has always been defined in terms of her sister - and so Anna makes a decision that for most would be unthinkable, a decision that will tear her family apart and have perhaps fatal consequences for the sister she loves." My thoughts: This novel is told through several points of view: Anna's, her mother Sara's, her father Brian's, her brother Jesse's, her lawyer Campbell's, and her guardian ad litem Julia's. I don't think Jesse's parts added much, and wish I could have heard Kate's point of view, but unfortunately her point of view only comes in during the epilogue. We only know what Kate's thinking or going through by the way it's seen through they eyes of those around her. From the beginning of the novel, I sympathize with Anna. I think, before her trial has even begun, that she should win the right to make her own medical decisions, the right to choose. It seems as if she's doing this for selfish reason, for attention; but even so, I root for her. She's torn between getting her independence and helping her sister, whom she loves very much. Because of this, Anna is confused. One minute she wants the lawsuit, but then the next, seeing how much it's hurting her family, she begins to reconsider. However, she does go through with it and it does go to trial. And throughout the novel, there are quite a few surprises, including Anna revealing that the intentions for her lawsuit are not all they seem. Also, the ending was definitely not what I expected. This novel is very well written and I highly recommend it. |
